So when can you start running after having a baby? This is the million dollar question we get asked by all our mother runners! We wish it was as simple as X days after delivery, but it’s more complex than that. We work with each of our mamas to assess their pelvic floor, core and hip strength first. That builds our foundation of strength. Next we work on impact loading and jumping drills in preparation for the dynamic movements that are required for running. Once all of those pieces are coordinating well, then we start to reintroduce a return-to-run training plan to help our mother runners reach their speed and distance goals.

Curious to run through (pun intended!) our Postpartum Return-to-Run Checklist to help you better answer WHEN? Yeah, we thought so!

Dr. Erin Foster, PT, DPT: Overcame pelvic floor issues.

I am an avid Crossfitter, and was determined to continue strength training throughout my pregnancies. Upon returning to the gym postpartum, I developed stress urinary incontinence with double unders (leaking w/ jumping rope) and eschewed my normally bright workout pants in favor of “safe” black. Being a PT myself (but not a specialist in pelvic health), I know that while this is common, it is NOT normal, so I sought out Christine for help. Chris is an excellent listener, who customized a treatment program especially tailored to my unique situation and goals. She made me feel very comfortable, demonstrated excellent diagnostic and manual therapy skills, spoke in an easy-to-understand manner, and quickly guided me back to full participation in Crossfit without symptoms. I am currently 32 weeks into my second pregnancy and have experienced zero symptoms so far, though will not hesitate to call Chris again if I need her assistance in returning to high level sports following the birth. I highly recommend reaching out to Christine with any questions / symptoms you may be experiencing – I am so thankful that I did!

Carrie: Overcame postpartum issues.

Two years after having baby #3–and after thinking I was doing all the “right” things to get back in shape, from running to boot camps–my back and hip started hurting so much that it was hard to walk. I was so depressed, because I couldn’t exercise and I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I was so far post-partum that I thought it couldn’t possibly be related to pregnancy, so it must have been something I did wrong. And I had all these kids who needed me to be strong and healthy!

I went to see several physical therapists. Some of them were great! But some of them kept throwing the same exercises at me, and I wasn’t really getting better… I didn’t know I had other options–but as soon as I heard about Christine, I contacted her. Even after the first meeting, I felt more confident that I would get better… Christine has totally changed my view of physical therapy. She has given me the tools so that I can really take care of myself if my body starts feeling a little off. But even though I feel confident and committed to creating my own exercise program at home, I love going to see her–both to play with new movements and to feel her support, which goes far beyond physical health.

Aurielle Whitmore: Overcame pelvic floor issues.

I finally made the decision to see Chris when I was 15 months postpartum after my first child. I didn’t feel my case was drastic or urgent enough to have gone sooner. I didn’t experience extreme bladder control issues or pain during sex. However, I hadn’t worked out at a gym for 15 months, sex with my husband just wasn’t great anymore and my menstrual cup wasn’t staying put. I knew something was off, my body felt different.

After my first few sessions with Chris, we realized that my brain lost connection with my pelvic floor muscles due to my son’s exhausting birth. We worked on specific pelvic floor exercises and Pilates to target areas to help awaken and connect me back to my body.

I looked forward most to connecting with Chris at the beginning of our sessions, she’s a great listener and just a down to earth person. As a new mom it’s nice to have someone other than your spouse or friends to talk to. I also love how knowledgeable Chris is about how the body moves and really targeting specific areas. As someone who loves to work out, she had me feeling great at the end of each session.
